What is Wedding Boudoir?

There is a lot to think about when you are planning to get married - the wedding itself (and all that goes with the party), finding vendors, scheduling an engagement session, maybe even rehearsing a first dance - all eyes are on you. Another thing that might be on your wedding planning list? Doing a pre-wedding or bridal boudoir session!

Maybe something like this isn't for you.  Maybe you think this is something that is too far outside of your comfort zone.  And if it is, that' totally ok!  But you just may be thinking what if this could be an unforgettable gift to yourself AND to your partner.  What if this experience lets you celebrate and honor this beautiful person you are?  What if this is something that leaves you feeling liberated and confident and amazing?  And trust me, it will.

Over my career as a wedding photographer, I have seen wedding boudoir photography become more and more popular. My very first boudoir clients were brides. They were normal, regular women on their wedding day who asked, tentatively if we could take a few images of them before they had their wedding dress on. They already had the hair and make up done, they already had gorgeous lingerie, they already had been working out and getting ready to be seen.

If you think that boudoir photography is something you would never do, think again.  I created Modern Muse, Boston Fine Art Boudoir so that anyone can feel comfortable and confident getting sensual and timeless images made at this moment in their lives.

Bridal Boudoir Photo Ideas

First, I believe that your bridal boudoir portraits should be recognizably you.  And that means that all Modern Muse sessions begin with listening to who you are and learning what you want to express through your bridal boudoir images. We don't put everyone in the same style and pose - it needs to feel natural and good and real for you.

What should you wear? How do you keep it elegant, classy and beautiful? Talk with your photographer about all this - and we will guide you through planning and prep.  Below are some ideas and inspiration about how to plan for and what to expect if you decide you’re feeling brave and ready to book your bridal boudoir session.

Bridal imagery tends to be white, ivory, white, blush and more white. Right? If those bridal-y tones feel right to you, start planning your colors there.  Of course, black lingerie is always a classic. And we also love navy if you want darker.

A lot of bridal boudoir sessions are light and airy, soft and feminine. Flowing fabrics and sheer veils.  And if that feels right for you - let’s do it! If that’s not what speaks to your sensual self, listen to your body and choose something else that does.

Accessories For Bridal Boudoir Shoots

Boudoir wedding photos are the perfect opportunity to get some amazing details of jewelry, especially if it was given by your partner. Pack your favorite pieces - things you wear every day or things you wear on special occasions.  Don’t forget your wedding veil, headpiece, or special jewelry you’re wearing at the wedding.

Jewelry Ideas:

  • Necklace
  • Rhinestones
  • Engagement Ring
  • Earrings
  • Pearls (Faux Pearls)

Headpiece Ideas:

  • Wedding veil
  • Floral headpiece
  • Jeweled hairpins
  • Vintage-inspired hair combs

Be True to You

Make it about who YOU are.  You are loved. For the person you actually are. And your bridal boudoir session should honor that.  All of us deserve to look and feel beautiful in our own skin.  Here are some ideas to feel amazing about yourself.  Choose what resonates with you.

Personalize It

Bring something specific to _your_ relationship. Something that shows your personality. This may be a piece of your partner’s clothing, a piece of jewelry or a scarf that you were given by your partner, or anything else that is a symbol (private or not) of your relationship.

Something New

Consider buying something new that speaks to this brave moment in your life as you step into this new chapter.  You may have brand new lingerie from a bridal shower. Wear what you feel amazing in.

Albums

Wedding and bridal boudoir is almost always intended to be a gift for your partner.  And wedding boudoir albums are at the top of the list for gifting boudoir options. Albums are an ideal way to share images that can celebrate the different sides of you. We plan and shoot for variety, to get images from just one bridal boudoir session that are modest, sensual, flirty, daring, coy, and strong.

If you get one thing out of reading this guide to wedding boudoir - remember that laughing is sexy and that best thing you can wear is confidence.

How Does a Bridal Boudoir Photo Session Work?

When you book a bridal boudoir session with Modern Muse, we start with a conversation and a questionnaire so we get to know who you are and want you to want out the bridal boudoir experience.  We take into account your own style, requests and the ultimate presentation of the image - usually a boudoir book to give.

If you are feeling curious about booking a shoot email me now for more ideas about your bridal boudoir portraits in Boston.

Barcelona Wine Bar Wedding

His mom handed him a few coins and pushed him toward the bride, whispering something in his ear.  He sheepishly shuffled over and waited for a break in the adult conversation.  "Here." he said and handed her the coins "For Luck."

This image, and the little moments like it, that punctuate and capture the true story of the wedding day are what my job as a wedding photographer are all about.  And if seeing this image and hearing its context doesn’t explain why a long shot list makes my role as a wedding photographer more challenging, I'm not sure what more I can tell you.

The shot lists that are prevalent in wedding planning blogs are shots that a seasoned professional will already be getting. They are the routine and standard highlights to any wedding day. What makes for the amazing photographs of your wedding day (the ones that you really want!) are the unscripted moments.  Like these below!

I often say to clients during an initial consult, that the majority of the day I am responding to what is happening with my camera rather than directing the day.  And I will always prefer to be alert looking my viewfinder than looking down at a piece of paper. Ultimately, if we are looking at a list we are not watching what is unfolding and happening organically and authentically around us.

It all comes down to trust. And it is with gratitude that I accept the trust that clients give me.

This small wedding was split in two.  A Friday civil ceremony at Newton City Hall (images above), which a handful of friends in addition to parents and siblings.  Then a Spanish lunch following a ring exchange and toasts at Barcelona Wine Bar in Brookline (images below).  A relaxed and flowing day filled with hugs and laughter and plates and plates of food.

The best advice I can give after 15 years of photographing weddings it to get to know your photographer and let your photographer truly know who you are. A great photographer will be able to get a sense of who you are as a couple, how you interact with your family and friends, and be able to intuit moments because they’re paying attention to them. Understanding who you are as unique individuals is critical to capturing the real story of your wedding.

Boston Baby Photographer

Love this couple and loved meeting their new son! I've been photographing these moms for a few years, from their North End engagement session to their wedding and their maternity session last spring. And now I finally get to meet their newest person - and he was full of smiles and robust baby limbs and shining eyes.  As you can see.

In home family photo sessions are one of my absolute favorites ways to capture a family exactly as they are.  It’s fun.  You can relax and this is critical when you are still negotiating life with a new family member.

One of my favorite parts, thinking as a parent, about choosing in-home family photo sessions is that you don't have to pack up all of the things and get anywhere on time.  You and your family just relax and let your joyful, and possibly chaotic, life unfold.  We handle the rest.

Photos with Little Kids and Big Dogs

I've found that many of our clients are like us - they had dogs first.  So I guess that makes me a dog person?  In any case, dogs are part of the family and have their own personalities and their own needs and like older siblings have mixed responses to another new little human in their pack.

Branding Photo Session with Global Pilates

Branding Photography Business Photos

Connection is everything. Especially in a person to person service that may be intimidating for newbies like pilates.

People are interested in where they will be, what it will look like, what you look like - they want to have a sense of the experience before they schedule an appointment.  So, let's show them!

With business photos and personal branding sessions and with service based businesses it is important that the photographs illustrate the value of the services they provide. How do we do that? We like to talk with our clients first, to get a sense of who they work with and what services or products they offer that they'd like to showcase in a true to life setting - here for example in her Global Pilates actual Copley Square Pilates studio.

Instead of posing next to the reformer, we decided it would be more valuable to show Katelyn working one on one with clients actually going through the process.  She works with many pregnant clients and also with men - two bodies that you don't typically associate with pilates.

As it happened the clients that modeled for us are actual clients - and expecting their first child.  I grabbed a belly silhouette before we wrapped our branding photography session at Katelyn's gorgeous Copley Square Studio.

In Home Newborn Portraits

Family Pictures with Newborn and Toddler

This playdate in home family portrait session – with newborn brother and his big sister.  Family lives down the street from us in a brick and beam loft. Big sister goes to school with my son and she was a little confused as to where he was when I came to meet her baby brother.  Born at home this newborn came into a beautiful and loving family a healthy and thriving boy.

Big sister was both fascinated and uninterested in the new family addition - as most older siblings at that age are.  I like to pay special attention to the older siblings (having been one myself). Their world has been upended and it’s important to acknowledge that.

This is a fairly typical playdate family portrait in home session where we go with the flow and meet the kids where they are.  We let things unfold naturally. This is, in my opinion, the best way of doing a family portrait session – keeping it authentic and honest.

Ideas for Sibling Photo Shoot

When a new sibling in introduced into the family, the older kids are equally important. I like to chat with families before I arrive, to get a sense (if we have not already met) of who they are and how they are coming into their new role.

I always want the older siblings feel special too. We all know about the regressions and behavior changes that happen. It’s because big brothers and big sisters can feel insecure and neglected which may lead to being uncooperative and sulky.  We don’t want that! When I arrive I make sure to focus on them and give them agency in the process; sometimes by asking for their opinions and wanting them to show me their rooms and what big kid things they are learning.

If they don’t want to participate in the family photos, I don’t force it.  They usually come around. If a grandparent or other relative is around to help with the new baby, let them have some time with the older sibling.

Beds, couches or a cozy blanket on the rug are all good places to have your older child interact with and even hold your newborn.

Newborn and Sibling Photography

As you can likely tell, I prefer to have newborns in the arms of the people who love them rather than isolated (for example in a basket).  We don't need to tell them to smile at the camera.  It's about you interacting with the people who are most important to you.

You may not look your best (especially with a newborn's feeding schedule) and the older sibling may not be perfectly behaved. Remember that ultimately these images are for you to look back at later. For your children to look back on later and to see them in the frame with you. They will be amazed at how tiny they were. And probably at how young you were.
