Boston City Hall Wedding

BOSTON CITY HALL WEDDING

I love photographing civil ceremonies at Boston City Hall! I have a few lined up this fall, and I realized I had not yet shared these beautiful images of Beatrix and Géza's Boston City Hall wedding. The weather did not look promising at all for their date  - with thunderstorms and 100% chance of rain.  But, as they say, a wet knot holds.

After the ceremony we used Boston City Hall itself as a background and then we popped over to the Union Oyster House for a celebratory drink while we waited for the shower to pass.  Then a stroll through Boston Common and the Public Garden.

One of the many reasons I love photographing weddings at Boston City Hall is that there are so many indoor places where we can take pictures, in case we cannot go outside due to weather.

Maine Coast Elopement Nubble Point

What does a bride wear to elope on thanksgiving morning at Nubble Point in York, Maine? Insulated Carhartt overalls & white cape, obviously. I slipped out in the morning to meet these two lovebirds at Nubble Point in York.  It was a windy, beautiful, cold and ultimately quick little ceremony that culminated in a champagne in the back seat of the truck.

A week before Thanksgiving, I received a facebook message from Melissa asking me what I was up to Thanksgiving morning.  She had remembered that we were to be in Portland, Maine with family that week.  She and her long time love had decided to elope!  They love Maine and were just wondering if I might be able to come down to document their ceremony.  Sounds fun, I thought. Then I looked at the weather. Yikes.

A few years ago at a family session in December, I realized that my poor fingers weren't that useful when the weather dipped below 20.  And I made a note to that I did not want to schedule any more outdoor shoots when it was that cold.  But Thanksgiving morning in Maine was slated to be 8 degrees, negative 6 in the wind chill.

How could I take pictures if I couldn't properly hold my gear?  Carhartt Sherpa Mitts to the rescue!  I bought these amazing mitts - and figured out all my settings before I got out of the car so I could operate everything with my fingers still inside.

It was a quick and lovely ceremony.  While the weather was indeed bracing, I kept warm enough nestled in my down coat.  The bride also wore Carhartt - a pair of insulated bib overalls completed by heels and white fur trimmed cape and muff.  It was perfectly Melissa.  A friend of the couple married them and then we all hopped in the back of their truck for a champagne toast before we went to our respective Thanksgiving dinners.

Belmont Family Pictures

At Home Family Photoshoot

Let Them Play!

I call them playdates.  Because it’s fun. And it’s less formal than portraits.  Connection based and family centered portraits document you and your family in and around your own home.  Our photographs tell your story. Do your little one have a special place where they play? Are they fascinated with an everyday activity - like washing the dishes in the kitchen sink? DO they love to play the piano?  These things are specific to the story of your family.

We are often most comfortable in our own environments and there’s no travel time for you.  It is more convenient, and it’s also rich is shooting possibilities. We did organize some formal portraits, like the ones above but the magic happens when we wait and watch for the candid and spontaneous.

Outdoor Family Portraits

There was a break in the clouds and we scurried off to Spy Pond in Arlington for a few outdoor images to compliment the ones we got indoors.  No one minded the drizzle - especially little Maya.

Larz Anderson Engagement Portraits

boston prewedding photoshoot brookline park

Sharing a few of my favorite image from a recent engagement portrait session, aka a Boston prewedding photoshoot, at Brookline's Larz Anderson Park.  We had a beautiful afternoon on the grounds of the former Larz Anderson estate.

Larz Anderson was one of the places that we went to as kids - specially to the outdoor skating rink at the very top. Huge expanses of lawns, fields and a sweeping views of Boston's skyline - though even from Brookline the city seems small.

What's the difference between an engagement shoot and a prewedding photoshoot?  The clothes.  At an engagement portrait session,  the couple wears everyday clothes - or really maybe better than everyday but not formal.   For a prewedding photoshoot, they wear their full formal wedding attire - wedding dress, suit or tux and have hair and make up professionally done and usually have flowers too.

Engagement or pre wedding photos? Which one is best for you?   While most of our couples prefer a more casual look and feel, some couples prefer prewedding photoshoots in their wedding wardrobes so they can spend more timing getting portraits without the constraint of the wedding day.   This is also a good option to consider if you feel that location (as I do!) is important to telling your love story.

It's not about looking like the perfect couple, it's about being who you are both as individuals and as yourselves.

Case in point, this couple wanted to dress as they would on their wedding day and chose to do a prewedding shoot here in Boston.  Though the ceremony will be held overseas with their families, they wanted to get portraits made in the city where they met.

We were able to capture a mix of traditional, casual and candid at our Larz Anderson prewedding photoshoot.  Congratulations to these two who have big things on their newly shared horizon!

I really love both engagement photoshoots and prewedding photoshoots.  In the time between deciding to get married and actually getting married, it's lovely to take some time to think about who you two are together right now.  Of course it's a chance to get comfortable in front of the camera and with your photographer  - but it's also a chance to learn about each other (check our our Visual Voice sessions!) to spend time together and to create a visual record of your lives outside of the ritual of the wedding day itself.

Field Tripping with Turkey Poults

colombia county ny photographerMy partner's family owns a beautiful place in Colombia County, NY.  We love to spend weekends out there when we can - and have gotten to know Mike and Michele of Yundwell Pastured Poultry.  Our son asks to visit them, their dog Mingus ("MINGA!) and their egg chickens ("BOKbokBOK!") each time we are out there.   This past weekend they asked me to document them moving their turkey poults from the barn into field.  Only a few weeks old, this was the first time they were big enough to move from the safety of the barn into the fields where they will be guarded by Nellie (full time flock/rafter protector and Maremma).

Spending time with Mike and Michele this summer has given us a deeper understanding of both farming and soil health.  Their chickens are in a movable roost that is regularly rotated around the farm to distribute manure, replenish nutrients and bring biological life to the fields.  By doing what they do, scratching seed and eating bugs, chickens (and now turkeys) contribute to keeping down weeds and pests.  Less bugs is great in our book!  Also Leonardo loves to watch Michele drive the tractor.  She has let him sit in the seat.  And it may have been the best moment of his life.  See below for photographic evidence.

ecstatic toddler driving tractor

We get our eggs from their farm.  And we've grill roasted their chickens.  Interested in supporting them?  You can visit their online store to purchase frozen whole birds, parts, and organs.  It's a drive from Boston, of course, but if you are headed out to the Hudson Valley, Albany or Troy it's worth a side trip.  Pick-up on the farm or local delivery is available.

Birds are so interesting to photograph!  Such personality.  Scroll through their field trip from barn to pasture in stills here. :) On Labor Day, these poults were ready to get to work on their pasture.

Bella Luna JP Wedding

I loved so many of the things about this wedding.  The low key and loving couple.  The very smart and feminist vows.  The incorporation of a scant few of the MANY books they own into the hilltop decor for their outdoor ceremony.  The nod to tradition that was a German wedding cup filled with amaro.

Larz Anderson Park Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

Lisa met Joe the ten years ago the day after Halloween, at the Silhouette in Allston. She was coming from a Day of the Dead-themed party and stopped off at the Sil for "one more." Joe was enjoying a night out. He offered to share his free Sil popcorn with her. She accepted.  They are still sharing popcorn at the Sil a decade later.

Joe thought Lisa was really cool and really different. No one ever started a conversation with him by talking about books and literature.  He wondered just what she was doing in a dive bar. Lisa thought Joe were super handsome and had the best stories. He matched every story she told with one of his own that was even better - she loved talking to him; there were no lulls.  She describes his as her partner, since week one, in every way.

Lisa and Joe shared their vows with each other , their friends and family in a beautiful outdoor wedding ceremony at Larz Anderson Park in Brookline.  With the Boston skyline as their backdrop - this is one of my favorite places to perch at see the city from afar. And also a simply gorgeous place for a wedding.

The ceremony was written by the couple, complete with some brilliant feminist asides from the bride and her mother. It was a beautiful setting to watch the couple express their deep love and gratitude towards each other and their families.  Lisa’s dad officiated. Her brother read Pablo Neruda's "Your Laughter." Joe’s niece acted as ring bearer. Over the course of the wedding day I realized that there were groups of friends from every phase in their lives present.  That speaks to how much each of them care about the relationships in their lives.

A simple and rustic outdoor ceremony, that was lightly book-themed with lots of hardcover books from their home library incorporated into the decor, with white chairs and greenery/succulents throughout at the ceremony.

They incorporated a German Bridal Cup "joining" ceremony into their wedding, where they both drank from the same specially-made cup at the same time - without spilling a drop.  This was especially impressive as it was not practiced beforehand. They also shared the tradition with their guests by passing out glasses to everyone, too, so they could enjoy a little nip along with them.

Bella Luna JP Wedding Reception

Bella Luna and the Milky Way in Jamaica Plain was the perfect wedding reception venue for this couple.  Who met over a bowl of popcorn a decade ago at a bar.  Do you remember where you were ten years ago? Whom you may have casually begun a conversation with? The moment when your life's course changed direction?

Like many Ars Magna wedding clients, their wedding was about wanting all of our friends and family to have fun and celebrate with them. To share good food and drinks and music with all the folks that matter. And that is what they did.

This is the third wedding I’ve photographed at the Bella luna in JP.  Each couple has been awesome in their own right. And each couple has had killer taste in music.  These two are no exception. They are good a music. Good at friendship. Good at words. Good at jokes.  Good at love.
