Boston Baby Photographer

Love this couple and loved meeting their new son! I've been photographing these moms for a few years, from their North End engagement session to their wedding and their maternity session last spring. And now I finally get to meet their newest person - and he was full of smiles and robust baby limbs and shining eyes.  As you can see.

In home family photo sessions are one of my absolute favorites ways to capture a family exactly as they are.  It’s fun.  You can relax and this is critical when you are still negotiating life with a new family member.

One of my favorite parts, thinking as a parent, about choosing in-home family photo sessions is that you don't have to pack up all of the things and get anywhere on time.  You and your family just relax and let your joyful, and possibly chaotic, life unfold.  We handle the rest.

Photos with Little Kids and Big Dogs

I've found that many of our clients are like us - they had dogs first.  So I guess that makes me a dog person?  In any case, dogs are part of the family and have their own personalities and their own needs and like older siblings have mixed responses to another new little human in their pack.

Family Pictures with Newborn and Toddler

This playdate in home family portrait session – with newborn brother and his big sister.  Family lives down the street from us in a brick and beam loft. Big sister goes to school with my son and she was a little confused as to where he was when I came to meet her baby brother.  Born at home this newborn came into a beautiful and loving family a healthy and thriving boy.

Big sister was both fascinated and uninterested in the new family addition - as most older siblings at that age are.  I like to pay special attention to the older siblings (having been one myself). Their world has been upended and it’s important to acknowledge that.

This is a fairly typical playdate family portrait in home session where we go with the flow and meet the kids where they are.  We let things unfold naturally. This is, in my opinion, the best way of doing a family portrait session – keeping it authentic and honest.

Ideas for Sibling Photo Shoot

When a new sibling in introduced into the family, the older kids are equally important. I like to chat with families before I arrive, to get a sense (if we have not already met) of who they are and how they are coming into their new role.

I always want the older siblings feel special too. We all know about the regressions and behavior changes that happen. It’s because big brothers and big sisters can feel insecure and neglected which may lead to being uncooperative and sulky.  We don’t want that! When I arrive I make sure to focus on them and give them agency in the process; sometimes by asking for their opinions and wanting them to show me their rooms and what big kid things they are learning.

If they don’t want to participate in the family photos, I don’t force it.  They usually come around. If a grandparent or other relative is around to help with the new baby, let them have some time with the older sibling.

Beds, couches or a cozy blanket on the rug are all good places to have your older child interact with and even hold your newborn.

Newborn and Sibling Photography

As you can likely tell, I prefer to have newborns in the arms of the people who love them rather than isolated (for example in a basket).  We don't need to tell them to smile at the camera.  It's about you interacting with the people who are most important to you.

You may not look your best (especially with a newborn's feeding schedule) and the older sibling may not be perfectly behaved. Remember that ultimately these images are for you to look back at later. For your children to look back on later and to see them in the frame with you. They will be amazed at how tiny they were. And probably at how young you were.

Child Led Family Portraits

Tuesdays after a long weekend are especially tough. We have played together and napped together and adventured together for three straight days.  Transitioning from having a luxurious lengthy weekends back to our individual routines and separate days of school and work is hard. We’re also transitioning seasons, although on this gray and windy day I still have a scarf wrapped around my neck and it’s hard to believe summer is supposedly around the corner.

Storytelling and sentiment

Why is it so hard to take pictures of my own child? Before I was a mom I used to imagine that having a child of my own, would be an endless source of inspiration and that I would be taking more portraits of him. But when I’m parenting I'm often truly enjoying the time we are spending that I forget to pick up a camera. So this weekend, while we were all together, I made a conscious effort to document as much as I could. From his point of view.

It’s a challenge as a mom to not just look at pictures of Leonardo’s and remember how much I love him, but look for moment through the viewfinder and in the editing process that really tells the story of his life right now.  I enjoyed taking all the photos, and the challenge of finding storytelling and also sentiment.

Mindful Family Photography

My recent practice of mindful parenting has influenced how I approach family portraits moving forward. It’s really important that the time I have my camera focused on your family that you are enjoying being together, being yourselves, having fun and truly connecting. We create child led and play based sessions as an opportunity for you to spend time together and for me to truly capture the authentic relationships - like all the best relationships we need to get to know each other first - so it starts with a conversation.

Family Portraits At Home

IN HOME PORTRAIT SESSIONS

winter day activity for toddlers finger painting with feet having fun at home family portrait session

We are grateful in many ways for living at Midway Artist Studios and one of the biggest reasons we love living here is the community.  And the building friends who are ready for make the most of any afternoon.  Leonardo and Lulu are just about two weeks apart and they are great friends.  Having friends in the building is even more awesome in the winter when the playground is just too cold.

We invited Lulu over to play and eventually I pulled out a roll of paper and we got them into just their diapers to really get into the experience of finger painting. As the painting was not limited to fingers -  toes got their fair share as did bellies and hair and backs. And so they just had to take a bath before lunch. Which it just may have been one of the highlights of their lives.

When was the last time you had this much fun?

FAMILY PORTRAITS TAKEN AT HOME

One of my favorite things about doing at home portrait sessions? No need to worry about the weather.  And you don't have to gather all the things and the kids.  You stay put.  We come to you.  This is huge if you have a newborn, or say live in New England.

The two biggest questions I get from parents about doing a family portrait session at their home are about lighting and about what they need to do to get the house ready.

LIGHTING INDOOR FAMILY PORTRAITS

We don’t all have great Architectural Digest rooms with sweeping natural light.  Ok, sometimes I do have a client that is excited to shoot under their skylight, or actually has an apartment with great light.  But most of us can’t say that. But it’s in knowing how to see the lighting that you have and where to photograph in that lighting that matters.

We will want to use natural light as much as we can. Open the blinds and pull back the curtains so we can immediately see the best light coming into your home. Natural light is ideal but we also bring off camera lighting equipment if we need it.  If we do set that up, it will still be a soft and natural feel to the final image.

CLEANING UP BEFORE A FAMILY PORTRAIT SESSION AT HOME

I’m sure that no matter what I write here, you actually do some amount of tidying before people come over.  But no need to Konmari your place. One of the best things about photography is that I get to decide what is in frame and what is out.  And the space that you live in and the space that your children play is matters to them.  As my mother always says  - unless it's a realtor, people are there to see you and not the house.

It’s normal to have extra things around and not enough closet space.  For your at home portrait session, we don’t need much space (especially for kids).  I may move some (movable) furniture around to make space for me to move, but everything goes back to its place when we are done.

Let Them Play!

I call them playdates.  Because it’s fun. And it’s less formal than portraits.  Connection based and family centered portraits document you and your family in and around your own home.  Our photographs tell your story. Do your little one have a special place where they play? Are they fascinated with an everyday activity - like washing the dishes in the kitchen sink? DO they love to play the piano?  These things are specific to the story of your family.

We are often most comfortable in our own environments and there’s no travel time for you.  It is more convenient, and it’s also rich is shooting possibilities. We did organize some formal portraits, like the ones above but the magic happens when we wait and watch for the candid and spontaneous.

Outdoor Family Portraits

There was a break in the clouds and we scurried off to Spy Pond in Arlington for a few outdoor images to compliment the ones we got indoors.  No one minded the drizzle - especially little Maya.

Family Portrait Photography - Four Generations

norwood family photography bisabuelo abuelo

I've known this Mama for a long time.  Perhaps, for both our sakes, I just saw over two decades.  We were in school together, and while she's been working in DC she occasionally comes up for school and family events.  She called a few weeks ago to set up a family portait.  She would be visiting her grandfather, with her husband and son. And her dad would be in the country for a visit too.  We had a few days where they would all overlap - so we made a plan to connect on Memorial Day.

I love that she has such a close relationship with her dad and her grandfather.  We had a great time chasing her toddler around the park.  He had a great time getting tickled and playing with his trucks.  It's a good day when you get to hug the people you love.
