Gender Reveal

These two woman are so much fun!  I literally chirped when they texted me to ask if I would photograph their gender reveal.

I've seen cakes before, but balloons are a fun and messy (the way I like it) way to find out gender.  And it was just the two of them (three if you count me, four if you count the child). They updated family later that evening - holding onto the joy and surprise to themselves for a few hours.

It was my job to run down to the car when they stopped by on their way home from the ultrasound and take possession of the sealed envelope.  And they also gave me a balloon kit and a few smoke bombs to pack for their shoot the next day.  I took my job very seriously.  Note, in the image below, that the balloon rode in the passenger seat for safety.

The engineer and I opted to wait for the birth of our child, so we could meet this new person with no expectations.  In retrospect, it also helped keep us in a bit of stasis while we held on to our lovely twosome and prepared mentally and emotionally to become parents.  Each family makes the decision that works for them.

No matter what our children will challenge our assumptions.  They will walk their own path.

Time is not actually money. We don't get our time back.  Not until that time machine actually becomes available can we go back and change our priorities; be more present, savor the shared moments we have with each other.  I feel this with my own family.  I want to breath in and hold as much as I can - it goes by, as they say, so quickly.

It is an honor to be asked to document this family grow, from their engagement session with a then wily little puppy, their winter Willowdale wedding and their first family session when they moved back to Massachusetts.   There are the big events in our lives (engagements weddings, children being born, etc.) and then also the little everyday adventures full of the spontaneous and unpremeditated.  Both are worth documenting and enjoying.

i spend the morning with the K family in their new home.  At the moment they are three, but they are preparing for a new baby.  Mom wanted to capture their lives and routine now as they anticipated this change.

Family Portraits - Mama & Me

An At-Home Family Portrait Session

Putting the video front and center. I've been quite enjoying combining little bits of video with the still images, suing them in combination to tell the story.  Watch the video below!

One of my favorite places to photograph a family is right in their own home.   I love photographing a family in own environment, in a place they feel comfortable and totally themselves.

Practically it’s also easier on the family not to coordinate getting out of the house. As I now know, that part may be the most challenging part of a family portrait.

At home playdates and adventure sessions are a way to authentically honor what makes your family unique.

The magical moments, the funny little things your children do, the crooked smiles, the feels. Once in a while I might give a wee bit of direction but it minimal.   I wouldn’t want you to look like anyone other than yourselves. And being in your own home at a playdate, or choosing the place for your adventure session, sets the tone for that.

It’s not about being perfect.  It’s about being yourselves. The beautiful moments that make up our lives happen every day.

In this case being ready to go to the park was great - because of all the fun images we got as Mama and daughter were getting dressed and ready to go to the park.  In the end, those were the best bits. The everyday little steps we take to do mundane adventures - like playing in the park.

I’m there to photograph your family, not your home.  When I arrive, I’ll scout out the best light, generally windows, and those are the areas that I’ll be mostly working in.  Don’t worry about spending much time cleaning. I certainly don’t judge the state of anyone else’s home.

Dress for what you are doing.  Baking cookies, playing in the garden, going for a bike ride.    Let the activity dictate your outfits for the photo session. Start with wardrobe for the parents first (something you feel comfortable and confident wearing), then then assemble some options for the children (I find giving them agency and buy in over the process goes miles). Logos and words can be distracting.

Be yourselves and enjoy the time you get to spend together!

As a family photographer, it’s the emotions, the connections and the humor that tells your family story.  Capturing who you are in your day to day life, instead of camera aware posing. With minimal direction from me, these candid moments of joy, laughter, exploration, mischief and capture who your family really is. This is your history.  Interesting a playdate family session? Or maybe an adventure session? Give me a call and we can start planning.

I've been working on a guide to hanging family photos.  It's in the works as an adobe spark page at the moment.  I wanted to share a few images that will eventually get into the guide.  And as I was pulling out the props for those images - I realized I had a few images that needed to make their way onto our walls.  I did, after all, get them printed (yay me!) and framed (double yay!!).  So that's what I will be doing this afternoon. Finishing up projects.  And I can confirm that this does, in fact, feel good.

How to Hang Family Pictures on the Wall

Our home reflects our personal style and is filled with the things that make us both happy.  And your should too. After all your space tells your story.

Family portraits add warmth and communicate the love in your family.  Choosing which images to print and frame can be a fun way to show your personalities.  When you incorporate family portraits into your home, you and your children see your loved ones and understand your place within the larger community.

Family photos don’t have to be reserved for private spaces.  I like to mix it up and have out family images integrated with all the other things we've collected; artwork, flea market finds, random glass animals and the plants that are hanging on for dear life.

Start with a plan. These are the kind of things you should know the answers to.

  • Where are you going to put the photograph?
  • What size should you get the image printed? (Usually it's bigger than you think)
  • What kind of frame would look best for the space it's going to inhabit and the actual image?  How much are you willing to spend on a frame?
  • Do you know where you hammer is?  Or do you need to borrow a neighbor's concrete/brick drill bit.

My Favorite Places to Hang Family Photos

    • Hallways - literally make a visual journey for the walk
    • Staircases - usually underutilized wall space
    • Entryway - what you see first and last
    • Family Room - set the tone for how you like to enjoy time together
    • Kitchen - mix it up with photos & art & menus!

The rest of the guide will be ready soon! Lots of pictures for inspiration.  Plus tremendous hand modeling by my sweetheart.

Southie Maternity Portraits

What a privilege to watch this family grow!  We did both the maternity session and the newborn portrait shoot right at their home, taking advantage of the cozy nursery and the excited pets.  I so enjoyed working with the Villanovas to tell this piece of their family story and am I honored to have been asked to take their Boston family photos.

This little guy came into the world healthy and ready to take on everything - expect perhaps this adorable crochet lion costume.  He wasn't having any of this. He was however, much happier to snuggle into dad and mom

Our Own Family Snow Day! Leonardo's First Sled Ride

Sunday I heard Papa utter words I never hear between October and May, when he is mostly and indoor cat.

Let's go out to play!

My own father had dropped off a sled the night before, in anticipation of the first snow of the season.  Not only it is the first snow of winter, it was L's first snowy adventure.  As you can see by the images below, he didn't really know what to think.  I love the bright green snowsuit and the orange sled against the white snow.  The graphic color juxaposition reminded me of this book which I love to read to him.

He's growing so fast.  You can see how much when you compare this little boy to the baby boy here and here.
