Boston Engagement Party and Portraits | Hotel Commonwealth

I met these two a few years ago, when Yun-Young’s family came in for his graduation from BU.  He brought along his girlfriend, and she jumped into the portrait below, after the family portraits were finished.  Their affection and chemistry evident.

Two years, two degrees and one engagement later:

I swear I didn't tell them to mirror the pose from two years ago.  It's just a natural gesture of love!

Enrolled in the same Dental Medicine school, it was a case of opposites attracting.  Hanna’s outgoing and social personality drew Yun-Young in.  These two enjoy traveling and eating and they love the Red Sox (people after my own heart!).

To celebrate their engagement, they hosted a dinner in the Olmsted Room at the Commonwealth Hotel - perfect for an intimate engagement party.  Gathering around the tables for toasting and celebrating with the couple, their families and friends showed their support and love.

Engagement parties are an opportunity for families to come together.  It a chance to congratulate the couple and for both families to meet and get to know each other.  They chose to host the engagement party in Boston the city where they met, after their Dental School graduation while both of their families were in town.  Keeping it casual, yet elegant, the beautiful Olmsted Room was the perfect size for an intimate dinner.

The Hawthorne, a favorite of mine when I lived in the Fenway, graciously let us step inside for a few moments to take portraits.  It was quite cold and windy, so we kept inside as much as we could.  But I did convince them to swiftly run over to the back of the hotel on Newbury Street for a few outdoor portraits - with Fenway in the background.

Milestone Portrait | 10 years of Medicine

Commemorating a life milestone (a decade of medical training and launching into a new job in a new city) and also a little bit of a first year anniversary and a little bit of saying goodbye to beautiful Providence before beginning dream career) with an afternoon portrait session and a cocktail party at The Dorrance.  I met these two at their wedding last year when I second shot for Krista Photography.  Krista was out of the country for this one, and I was thrilled to photograph them again.

Sunday Afternon Feast

On the heels of the high school reunion, a group of college friends gathered this weekend to visit, reminisce and eat. Our hosts could entertain.  And how!  This parade of food was lovingly laid out while the albums of our youth wafted across the yard from the spare bedroom window.

It was a lovely summer afternoon for sprawling out in the grass as the courses kept coming.  Our hosts manned the bbq, grilling in sequence chicken wings, mackerel, eggplant, potatoes, ribs (beef and pork) and greens.  Toasting with a few glasses of lambrusco, we're definitely eating better than we did in college, but the conviviality was the same.

Boston Strong | Fort Myers to Fenway

Our story begins with a wedding in 2012. With a twice rescheduled engagement session. With a perfect summer evening wedding. With tears of laughter and emotion. With a growing admiration and love for two people, two families, one beautiful love story. This is ideal story of building relationships with clients. Getting to really get to know them. Learning and then instinctively knowing their humor, the pulse of how they interact with each other. Finding out how much you like them as people. Wonderful and magnetic and generous caring people.

Tears returning when I hear that they were injured. And again when I get a phone call asking me to photograph their first look. And again, while pressing my body into the corner of a hospital room as one gurney gets rolled in and aligned parallel to the other. The camera becoming salty with tears. Overwhelmed by this access. This honor. This moment.

And then two years later, I was asked to photograph them again. This time to photograph them with their Boylston Street family at Fenway Park. Standing in left field as a flurry of wet snow announced that we were still in winter.  This coming together for a group photo serving to both take a picture and also to dedicate a positive time to be together.  To drink beer. To practice in the visitor’s batting cages. To catch up. To measure growth of children. To measure growth of strength.

We didn’t win the contest, but they sent us anyway.  Sunrise at Logan, the sun setting over the warm Florida evening in Fort Meyer as we got onto the plane home.  Our group of 20, service dogs in tow, had an truly extraordinary day.  We met Brock and Shane. Pedro came out, waved and threw out a ball.

Being in left field of Fenway, getting a one in a lifetime trip to spring training - it all paled in comparison to knowing this group of people.

Life goes on. In a powerful and fundamental way. It proceeds. With children and fiancees and wives and husbands and sisters and brothers. With love.

Thanks to Jet Blue for everything!

Winter is coming. So is Black Friday!

Details on Limited Edition Black Book sessions and your chance to reserve your session will be announced this Friday.  Stay tuned!

Boston Boudoir .:. New Studio Backdrop and Self Portrait

A few months ago on a Sunday excursion with the engineer, I picked up this fabric at Sewfisticated, sewed up a backdrop and still, by August, I hadn't used it yet. So I set it up for a boudoir studio shoot last night. And dear client was not having it. Nope. She wanted white and gray and brick. Which, to be fair, she rocked.
But I needed to see how this diy studio fabric backdrop photographed. So I jumped in this afternoon to do a few self portraits. And come now, what better to wear with a patterned backdrop than MORE PATTERN!

Here you have it: three black and white patterns, a youtube eye makeup tutorial, some glamour lighting and shazam!
