In Home Family Portraits

Boston Baby Photographer

Love this couple and loved meeting their new son! I've been photographing these moms for a few years, from their North End engagement session to their wedding and their maternity session last spring. And now I finally get to meet their newest person - and he was full of smiles and robust baby limbs and shining eyes.  As you can see.

In home family photo sessions are one of my absolute favorites ways to capture a family exactly as they are.  It’s fun.  You can relax and this is critical when you are still negotiating life with a new family member.

One of my favorite parts, thinking as a parent, about choosing in-home family photo sessions is that you don't have to pack up all of the things and get anywhere on time.  You and your family just relax and let your joyful, and possibly chaotic, life unfold.  We handle the rest.

Photos with Little Kids and Big Dogs

I've found that many of our clients are like us - they had dogs first.  So I guess that makes me a dog person?  In any case, dogs are part of the family and have their own personalities and their own needs and like older siblings have mixed responses to another new little human in their pack.

Boston Indoor Engagement Session

New England winter.  Outdoor shoots. Yikes.  While you could throw caution to the wind and shoot outdoor, there are many months that you, and I, would rather cozy up inside.   A and N wanted to do an indoor engagement shoot in Boston even before we knew it would be a chilly Sunday afternoon.  After scouting out a few places, I fell in love with the light and atmosphere at Fort Point's Oak + Rowan.  We once lived across the street from this space when it was Twelve Chairs.  Now a brick and beam lofty industrial space that makes the most of its window light - the space is both comfortable and modern. (and the dessert menu . . . . trust me.)

If you want to rock your Boston engagement portraits like these two without fretting about plan B for weather,  start thinking about doing portraits in beautiful spaces like this!

Of course, you don't have to go to a bar or restaurant.  Other Indoor Locations in Boston to Shoot Your Engagement Photos - your place, one of the many universities we have in Boston or across the river (perhaps you once attended one of them), the Butterfly Place is one of my favorites!

Loved this session!  These love birds were amazing.  A late afternoon.  A Rent-the-Runway dress. A welcoming staff at Oak + Rowan.  Perfection.

Maternity Portraits Jamaica Plain

Sharing this afternoon a few favorites from a recent at home maternity portrait session in Jamaica Plain.  Excited and eagerly awaiting their daughter, we did a few portraits in their home and also in their neighborhood taking advantage of this gorgeous fall weather we've been having here in Boston.  Pregnancy photography presents a wonderful time to document a life milestone.  Sharing the anticipation and joy as they wait to meet their newest family member.

Their cat even got into the mix - this is one of my favorite family portraits of the season!

We concluded with a few beautiful belly images, shot in the remaining light coming through the bedroom windows.  An impromptu natural light studio at our disposal! :)

Boston is a city with so many wonderful locations to explore and use as a backdrop for a fun family adventure portrait session.  This family suggested we meet at Castle Island in South Boston.  It was the first time their son has been there - and he was so excited to explore.  For children who love trains, planes and boats - it’s a dream come true.

SIBLING MATERNITY PORTRAITS

Now as a parent, I’m ever aware of how much and how fast things change.  This is a moment for their family where they are still three.  And as the oldest child, I remember what a big shift it was in our family when my sister was born.  Your place as first born won’t be challenged, but the family dynamics naturally change.

Adventure (outdoor) family portrait sessions are a beautiful way to capture family living in the city.  Kids have a chance to run around and explore. Your portraits have a sense of place of our historic city.  We also do playdate (indoor) family portrait sessions.  These are a good option for unpleasant weather, children who can’t yet walk or homebodies.

Let me tell your family’s story.  Ars Magna means Great Art - and your stories, big and small, are indeed great.  Now is the time to get a family session scheduled for late summer or early fall. To learn more about adventure and playdate session options and to book a session, contact me here or by calling 617-942-1449!

PREGNANCY PICTURES, A PERSONAL POST (cross-posted from Modern Glamour)

Yes!  This is me! Doing what James refers to as my magazine face. James and I are expecting our first child in a few weeks. As we round this corner, we’ve been overcome with the depth of love, wonder and awe over what being a family means.

My personal posts have become more and more rare.  This started at some point after my divorce - an experience I did not want to share via social media.  My continued reluctance on revealing my own inner world became more apparent when I determinedly kept the news of my pregnancy off social media.  The reasons were several. In no particular order -

My own struggle with infertility, and divorce, in my early thirties locked me into an internalized chaos.  During that time, it was a challenge for me to share the in joys of my friends who were in successful marriages and starting families.

I was worried that there would be a perception that my business would be over, that I would not be able to continue booking jobs when clients found out I was pregnant.

As someone born at the tail end of Gen X, I am still uncomfortable placing information about my private life in the public sphere.

Weeks away from the due date, I still didn’t have any more than a handful of maternity portraits and those were barely portraits being primarily early morning bathroom selfies taken with my phone.  What was the hesitation to make a record of this time in my life? Did documenting this change make it more real?  Or less real?

My prenatal yoga and mindfulness practice (thank you Emily Masnoon!) slowed me down to be aware of the changes that were happening, not only in my relationship to James, and my body but to my self.

This new and evolving relationship needed documentation.

On Sunday, in the midst of bedroom construction (teary goodbye to our epic open floor plan), I set up a new backdrop and began to make some self portraits.  I was feeling good about this moment, about my belly, about embracing this time in our lives.

James made a half hearted attempt to get in a few images - but his awkwardness in the images prevailed and has requested those are not distributed.

It is with delight and gratitude that we welcome a new person into our growing family this year.  James is referring to it as our New World Order (and has created this is a bold red on our calendar).  I expect to continue my work as a portrait photographer and a handful of weddings of course.

My dear friend and new mom, Kiera whose maternity portraits I took at the end of last year,  gifted us a book for expectant parents.  One of the prenatal prompts for writing was What Adventures Have You Already Taken Your Child On?  It was that compelled me to make it down to the Women’s March.  Being there, surrounded by people who care fiercely about justice and compassion, who are ready and willing to make their lives is what I hope for this child.  To be part of a loving community that respects plurality of all people and all kinds of families.

Valentine’s Day is about expressing and sharing love.  And that requires courage and fearlessness.

In that spirit, I begin this new phase and open up to our personal lives, our inner world, our private selves.

As such, I hope that your day (and week! And year!) is heartened with reminders of the courageous and loving people you have in your lives.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Another newborn!  :)

I find that my lens is always gravitating towards newborn feet.  Yes, they are cute.  But there's probably something more than that.  Symbolically perhaps.  Where will these feet go?  What steps, literally and figuratively, will they take?

Family Portraits in the Home

Just a few days after birth, I came to the client's home and we spend a sunny and cold winter morning making some family pictures of B's first week at home.  She was born just before the holidays and there were little outfits and hats galore to play with.  Mom even brought out an ornament wreath that perfectly encircled B as she snuggled into her baby blanket.

B was very alert for a newborn.  She kept her eyes locked on us the whole time.
