Child Led Family Portraits

Tuesdays after a long weekend are especially tough. We have played together and napped together and adventured together for three straight days.  Transitioning from having a luxurious lengthy weekends back to our individual routines and separate days of school and work is hard. We’re also transitioning seasons, although on this gray and windy day I still have a scarf wrapped around my neck and it’s hard to believe summer is supposedly around the corner.

Storytelling and sentiment

Why is it so hard to take pictures of my own child? Before I was a mom I used to imagine that having a child of my own, would be an endless source of inspiration and that I would be taking more portraits of him. But when I’m parenting I'm often truly enjoying the time we are spending that I forget to pick up a camera. So this weekend, while we were all together, I made a conscious effort to document as much as I could. From his point of view.

It’s a challenge as a mom to not just look at pictures of Leonardo’s and remember how much I love him, but look for moment through the viewfinder and in the editing process that really tells the story of his life right now.  I enjoyed taking all the photos, and the challenge of finding storytelling and also sentiment.

Mindful Family Photography

My recent practice of mindful parenting has influenced how I approach family portraits moving forward. It’s really important that the time I have my camera focused on your family that you are enjoying being together, being yourselves, having fun and truly connecting. We create child led and play based sessions as an opportunity for you to spend time together and for me to truly capture the authentic relationships - like all the best relationships we need to get to know each other first - so it starts with a conversation.

Engagement Photos in the Berkshires

Wanted to share a few of my favorite images from this beautiful fall engagement session that I photographed over Columbus Day weekend.  This couple opted in for Visual Voice - so a full post, complete with tears and laughter, will come later, I promise.  You can checkout another example of Visual Voice Love Story here

The autumn leaves have arrived!  And half of them, at least, are still on the trees.  Taking advantage of the natural beauty and the long weekend, we spent an afternoon on The Engineer's family property just past the Berkshires.  It turned out to be a gorgeous day and bonus that it's private property so their adorable dog could join us!

More to come . . .
