Small Downtown Boston Elopement

A Very Small Downtown Boston Wedding

It's been a very long roll out to Spring.  We've all been feeling it.   Earlier this month I had the pleasure of photographing  a very small downtown Boston wedding.  So small that the only people in attendance were a brother and their amazing little dog.  Which really makes for a guest list of one human, one canine.

The newlyweds will plan a larger reception with their families later, but I understood completely when they told me that they really just wanted to be married and with their out of sync work schedules that they decided to get married on the day they were both off, which happened to be a Wednesday.  And there's no reason a Wednesday isn't as good a day as a Saturday or a Sunday to get married.

It was windy.  And you may remember if you've been in our fair city this "spring," that the brisk breezes have most definitely been blowing.

We met at their apartment and then connected with the officiant.  The brides wanted to get married across the street from their apartment, at the fountain behind the Prudential center.  It was a beautiful civil ceremony, each bride reading their own vows.

I'm sure you have been to, or perhaps even had, a big wedding.  There is something to be said for doing it up.  But there is also something beautiful about pairing everything down to the moist essential.  Your fiance.  Your brother. Your dog.  The city where you met and fell in love.   These kind of intimate celebrations are wonderful, immediate and emotional.

Bella Luna Wedding Photography in Jamaica Plain

A peek at an amazing wedding last weekend at Jamaica Plain's very own Bella Luna. The last event I photographed there was the adoption party/wedding at Bella Luna five years ago.

This weekend's bride killed it in a red dress.  Emphasizing the color and joy of this October wedding, we took some portraits along Center Street.  Pizza and beer.  Cupcakes and champagne. A little Newly Weds game show live set. Loved this whole wedding!

More to come as I climb out of the editing weeds this month. jamaica plain wedding at bella luna red dress

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY QUESTIONS TO ASK

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY QUESTIONS TO ASK

Wedding planning guides, and wedding planning websites, suggest some standard questions.  They usually come up naturally in conversation and they do get asked during initial meetings.

Comparing Wedding Photographers

The primary three things when you are looking for a wedding photographer:

Portfolio (Do you love the way this photographer sees?)

Price (Is the price point something you are comfortable with?)

Personality (Will you and do you get along with this person?)

Every has their own way to doing business that is right for them. Hourly coverage, packages or collections, unlimited hours. Our pricing is based on what works for our individual businesses.  So it can make it a challenge to compare.

The Big Questions

What follows are a list of the big questions that we, as wedding photographers, regularly get.  You may desperately want to know there answers. You may not have thought about some of them at all.  When you talk with wedding photographers their answers to these questions should help you feel like you are working with a professional wedding photographer.

Do you have backup wedding photographers who will shoot the wedding if you're sick?

Will there be a second shooter or any assistants? Is there an additional fee for these?

Have you ever shot at my wedding venue(s) before? I understand it’s comforting to have a photographer know your venue and it’s quirks and magical spots.  Even if it’s the same physical location every wedding is different, and the days unfold in their own ways.

Will the wedding photos be exposure corrected and color balanced?

What gets retouched?

What is the deposit and total fee if we want to book you as our wedding photographer?

When do we get to see the wedding pictures?!

How many weddings have you photographed, and how many do you do in a year?

Is wedding photography your main business? What percentage of your work is composed of weddings?

How many images do we get of our wedding?

When do we get to see the wedding pictures?!

Do you shoot both digital and film?

How do you process the images?

What are the restrictions for sharing photos online or for publication?

Do you own the copyright to the wedding photos?

When do we get to see the wedding pictures?!

And The Big (usually unasked) Question

Why is it so expensive?

Cameras, lenses, lighting, back up gear, insurance (business and health), studio rent, self employment tax, software licensing, advertising, equipment repair - it all adds up to a lot for a full time photographer.

Photography is a luxury.  You don't need a wedding photographer any more than you need a wedding dress or a bouquet or a diamond to get married.

Questions Your Wedding Photographer Wants To Ask You

Are you already thinking wedding day logistics and lighting? Might you be planning the wedding ceremony for sunset?

Will you want family portraits done before or after the wedding ceremony? Inside or outside?

Are you open to talking through the timeline of the wedding day so your photographer can capture what you want?

How will you and your partner be if your wedding doesn’t unfold exactly the way you imagine it should? Spoiler: it likely won’t.

Will you trust us to capture the magic and moments are we see them?

If you send us a wedding photography pinterest board, will you want us to replicate other people’s images or are you using pinterest as a tool for research and learn what style of photography you like?

How do you want to display your wedding pictures?  Will they languish forever on a USB drive or in a facebook album?  Will you post some to Instagram?  Will you want to share prints with your family for the holidays?  Are you interested in getting an album?

What are you most excited about on the wedding day? The dance party? The ceremony? Seeing family? Eating? Pictures? What are the most important parts for you?

Anniversary Post: Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center Wedding Photography

As I'm on maternity leave, I'm reposting some of my favorite weddings as anniversary posts.

I've been able to get to photograph and know this amazing family over the past several years. Turns out that we have overlapping friends and intersected lives.  I'm so glad that we found each other.

Here's a recent portrait from a family session last fall.  Their family has grown with a new daughter and a new son.

Last time we saw this family, their Cambridge wedding was a year away. Teachers are a special breed.  I know, I was once one of them.  They value tradition, but aren't ruled by it.  There is consistency and earnestness inherent.  Able to be serious. Ready to have fun. Both bride and groom, as well as a good amount of the wedding guests were teachers.  Just a few of the reasons I enjoyed working with M. and I at their Cambridge wedding.

From the custom converse on the groomsmen (and for the dancing bride) to the vows read from an iphone (so 2011, right?) they owned this wedding day.  Though, the couple's daughter, Frannie, nearly stole the show in her green dress and purple shoes. We made a few portraits in the courtyard at Le Meridien, then onward to the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, where the flowering trees flanked the sunset ceremony in the courtyard.  Strolling reception gave way to dancing, and toasts and cake.

Life is surprises.  M.'s vows began with an acknowledgement of that.  Life is unexpected.  Life is love.

And a special thanks to Douglas Levy for working with me on this one!

How to Choose Photos for Wedding Album

How to Choose Photos for Your Wedding Album

Your reference guide as you choose images for your wedding album.

I've already given the reasons why I think everyone should move past "just digital files" and opt for printing their wedding pictures and making beautiful wedding albums.  Below is my guide on how to choose photos for your wedding album.

The amount of images you have in your wedding album corresponds to the size of your wedding and the hours of wedding day coverage. Keep in mind that the more family and guests you want to have in our album, the bigger it gets.  I suggest you begin by choosing 40 as a starting point.

Choose the images that you feel the most connection to and that showcase the moments you want to preserve and remember. There is no one-size-fits-all formula. Just like each relationship, each wedding and each marriage, each wedding album is different.

It comes down to these two things: Look for the essentials. Trust your instincts. This album will tell your story - and your story is important.

Here are the highlights to look for when you are choosing photos for your wedding album.

SETTING THE WEDDING SCENE

cape cod wedding photography sunset

Choose an establishing shot or one hero image that sums up the romance of the day. This could be an image of the venue, a wide- angle view of the ceremony, or one of your favorite portraits of the two of you. Like a movie preview, this establishing shot gives an overview of the day, before the wedding day story begins.

GETTING READY: BEFORE THE WEDDING

cambridge ma wedding photography prayer before ceremony

Select your favorites from the time before the ceremony begins. These finishing touches before vows are said are a lovely part of the wedding day story. Find the meaningful details and moments as you prepare for the wedding ceremony.

WEDDING FIRST LOOK

lyman estate wedding photos first look

Did you do a First Look before the guests arrived? Look for a mix of action, reaction and portraits from this reveal. Include scenic images that showcase your surroundings in addition to closer framing of your faces as you see each other for the first time.

FAMILY PORTRAITS

Don’t forget your wedding party and family portraits! This selection doesn’t need to be traditional or formal. If both sides of the families were represented, make sure to include an even mix.

WEDDING CEREMONY

cape cod wedding photography sunset

The wedding day hinges on the ceremony. Here, go for a mix of wide shots and close-up of the action. The ring exchange and the kiss are key. Did someone speak, or give a blessing?  Include any special parts of your ceremony.

WEDDING COUPLE PORTRAITS

boston city hall wedding photos

Opt for a mix of wide and close-up images of the two of you together. These can be both portraits and candid moments.

WEDDING RECEPTION

duxbury bay maritime academy wedding photography

You both chose this particular location for a reason. Pick images of the venue and the details that made your celebration unique. Things like guest seating or menu cards, your dessert table or a Revolutionary War Reenactment fife and drum.

WEDDING DANCING

commanders mansion arlington wedding pictures

There’s connection, laughter, sometimes tears during these dance steps. Opt for some images from your first dance together. If you also danced with your parents, include images from parent dances.

WEDDING TOASTS

wedding toasts shalin liu performance center photography

Go for both action (the person toasting) and the reaction (your emotional response) for the toasts. These will be designed with the speakers on one side and your reactions to their words on the other.

WEDDING CAKE

commanders mansion wedding photography cake cutting

Did you cut into your wedding cake, or pie, with glee? Was there smashing? Kissing? Cute children waiting anxiously? Choose one one or two photos that stand out to you.

WEDDING PARTY/AFTER PARTY

duxbury bay maritime academy wedding photography

Make sure you immortalize a handful of those killer party dance moves on the pages of your album. Look for celebratory movement, laughter, and sweat. Some dance moves are forever.

CLOSING SHOT

misselwood wedding photography sunset

Think about an image with which to end your wedding album. Did I whisk you off the dance floor to make an evening portrait of the two of you? Do you want to use an image that sums up the party? You could even close with a detail image of your rings. Think final credits of a movie you love and want to watch all over again.

I love photographing weddings and sending the final images off to clients in gorgeous heirloom albums that are sure to be treasured.
