Tis the season of getting married at City Hall!  I seem to be heading to Boston's Government Center a fair amount in April and May. In fact, I am pretty sure I did a wedding there the last time we had a Friday the 13th in April.

I was in SF when this mother-to-be/bride first called to ask about wedding photography for a Boston City Hall wedding.  WE hit it off on the phone, and ended up chatting second semester stories.  As Boston is such a small city, we had more than a few things in common.

Getting Married at Boston City Hall

I adore photographing around Government Center and Boston City Hall - the layers of Boston's history are everywhere.  From any viewpoint, you can spot different architectural eras, development and style.

There’s a lovely quiet excitement at City Hall weddings.  I offer weekday wedding coverage that includes photographing the ceremony and a fun portrait session with our fair city as the backdrop.

Small Downtown Boston Elopement

A Very Small Downtown Boston Wedding

It's been a very long roll out to Spring.  We've all been feeling it.   Earlier this month I had the pleasure of photographing  a very small downtown Boston wedding.  So small that the only people in attendance were a brother and their amazing little dog.  Which really makes for a guest list of one human, one canine.

The newlyweds will plan a larger reception with their families later, but I understood completely when they told me that they really just wanted to be married and with their out of sync work schedules that they decided to get married on the day they were both off, which happened to be a Wednesday.  And there's no reason a Wednesday isn't as good a day as a Saturday or a Sunday to get married.

It was windy.  And you may remember if you've been in our fair city this "spring," that the brisk breezes have most definitely been blowing.

We met at their apartment and then connected with the officiant.  The brides wanted to get married across the street from their apartment, at the fountain behind the Prudential center.  It was a beautiful civil ceremony, each bride reading their own vows.

I'm sure you have been to, or perhaps even had, a big wedding.  There is something to be said for doing it up.  But there is also something beautiful about pairing everything down to the moist essential.  Your fiance.  Your brother. Your dog.  The city where you met and fell in love.   These kind of intimate celebrations are wonderful, immediate and emotional.

ELOPMENT AT BOSTON CITY HALL

A small wedding. So small it was just the bride and groom.  Just the two of them and their love for each other was all they needed. Meeting up with family later in the evening for a fancy dinner to celebrate.  We had a great afternoon (perfect weather!) to shoot the quick civil ceremony and then do some portraits featuring the architecture of Boston.

BOSTON CITY HALL WEDDING

Boston City Hall is a building about which people have strong opinions.  This couple was into the concrete.  And into the geometric interiors.  So we spend a few minutes shooting inside City Hall before heading up to the City Clerk's office.

Of course with Ortiz's jersey front and center, we had to commemorate the doubly important day.

One of the many reasons I love photographing in and around City Hall and Government Center is the layers of building that speak to the history of the city itself.  In most views you can see different architectural styles and waves of development.  I'm also digging the new Government Center train station and the baby trees that are now dotting the moat of brick that surrounds the building.

ELOPING IN BOSTON

The original plan was just the two of them.  But when parent's were notified, they decided to fly to to witness and celebrate. And a few more friends joined in for good measure.

Granted a brief pass from active duty to come up to Boston to get married.  We met up on the stoop of his first Boston apartment.  P was living there in a tiny studio apartment when he and V met.

Presided over by City Clerk Maureen Feeney, the ceremony was held in her office, which just about fit the group gathered.  Feeney was, as always, a delightful officiant.  Explaining the paper work before bringing the couple up in front of her bookcase to say their vows.

Boston City Hall is a great, and architecturally fascinating, place to have a civil ceremony in Boston.  After the ceremony,  the North End, Faneuil Hall, the Rose Kennedy Greenway, the Boston Public Garden, and Beacon Hill are all just a short walk away.

In our initial conversation, it was decided that, as they met in the city ad are now leaving, the bride and groom wanted to incorporate a Boston feel to the environmental portraits.  We took a few moments in the Blackstone Block and then Post Office Square before parting ways.  They went off to celebrate at JM Curley's with their parents and friends.  Congratulations!  Wishing you both the best as you set off on new chapters, professionally and personally!

It was an afternoon of quiet excitement at Boston City Hall.  I met X and P, and both sets of parents, at the clerk's office a few minutes before their assigned wedding ceremony time.  They met a party at hosted by a mutual friend and found each other so easy to talk to and now here they are taking this big step to joining their lives together.

The sun was rapidly setting, as it does this time of year.  We followed the light and walked over to the Boston Common to do some family and couple portraits.  They mentioned that they were nervous having their picture taken, but I think they did a great job.  The excitement of getting married and the beautiful late fall weather definitely made them more comfortable.

BOSTON WEDDING

Some of my favorite weddings every year are civil ceremonies at City Hall.  Joanne and Johnny wanted an intimate City Hall wedding ceremony with just their son, so they decided to get married at Boston City Hall  last week.  With the new school year underway, and a new home purchase in process - they decided to forego a big wedding and have a small wedding instead.

This wedding was a small intimate wedding with just the three key people: bride, groom and their son who acted as ring bearer. I love small weddings like this one.  The love, the joy; the excitement is all bundled into a small intimate time frame.Boston City Clerk, Maureen Feeney, who is one of my favorite Boston wedding officiants, presided over their civil ceremony in her office at Boston City Hall.  She was wonderful with their son, giving him detailed instructions to how to hold their rings, where to stand, and when to give them to his parents.  He sat every patiently waiting for his moment, and putting the rings on his fingers.

We were ahead of the rain on Friday, so we went outside onto City Hall Plaza (the part that has been softened from the sea of brick to trees) to make some family portraits commemorating this special day in all of their lives.
